Globe vs Smart: the key difference
| Network | Strengths | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Globe Telecom | Strong in Metro Manila and Visayas (Cebu, Boracay); expanding 5G in major cities; partnerships with international carriers for eSIM roaming | Manila, Cebu, Boracay, Palawan, most Visayas destinations |
| Smart (PLDT) | Good in Mindanao and northern Luzon; competitive with Globe in tourist hotspots; strong corporate presence | Davao, Mindanao, northern Luzon; comparable in most tourist areas |
Coverage by destination
Metro Manila
Excellent 4G/5G from both Globe and Smart. BGC, Makati, Intramuros, and the airport area all have strong signal. MRT Line 3 stations have coverage; in-tunnel is intermittent.
Boracay
Full coverage island-wide from both carriers. White Beach (all three stations), Bulabog Beach, and the interior all have solid 4G. One of the best-connected island destinations in the Philippines.
Palawan (El Nido)
El Nido town: good 4G from Globe and Smart. Island hopping tours (Big/Small Lagoon, Shimizu, Snake Island): no coverage at the actual sites. Download maps in town before departing.
Siargao
General Luna (main town) has 4G. Cloud 9 surf break: fair coverage. Remote surf breaks (Pacifico, Secret Island): no coverage or very weak. The road to Del Carmen mangroves: patchy.
Cebu
Cebu City: excellent coverage. Mactan Island (resort area, airport): very good. Oslob (whale sharks): fair. Moalboal (diving): good in town, drops in water. Malapascua Island: fair in the village.
Bohol
Tagbilaran City: good coverage. Chocolate Hills area (Carmen): fair signal. Panglao Island (diving resort area): good coverage. Remote rural areas of Bohol: limited.
Island-hopping: the offline maps rule
The Philippines has 7,641 islands. The vast majority have no mobile signal. This matters practically for tourists because many popular activities — island-hopping tours, snorkelling at remote beaches, visiting lagoons and caves — take you completely off the network.
Before any island hopping trip:
• Download offline Google Maps for the area before leaving port
• Screenshot ferry times and your accommodation address
• Save emergency contacts (coast guard: 117) while you have signal
• Arrange return ferry/boat times verbally before departing — you won't be able to book online from the island
How much data do you need?
| Trip type | Recommended data |
|---|---|
| 1-week Manila + Boracay | 8–12 GB |
| 2-week Palawan (El Nido + Puerto Princesa) | 8–12 GB — most time in signal-free areas |
| 2-week Cebu + Bohol | 10–15 GB |
| 3-week multi-island backpacker trip | 15–20 GB |
| Manila digital nomad | 30–50 GB per month |
Frequently asked questions
Does eSIM work in the Philippines?
Yes. Globe and Smart both support eSIM. Good 4G in Manila, Cebu, Davao and main tourist towns. Most actual island sites (lagoons, beaches, dive spots) have no signal — download maps before departing any town.
Globe vs Smart for tourists?
Globe is stronger in the Visayas (Cebu, Boracay). Smart is competitive in Mindanao and northern Luzon. For most tourist itineraries, either works — both have coverage in El Nido, Boracay, and Siargao main towns.
Is there signal at El Nido lagoons?
No. El Nido town has 4G, but the island sites on tours (Big Lagoon, Small Lagoon, beaches) have no coverage. Download offline maps and save key information before departing by boat.
Does Boracay have good signal?
Yes — Boracay is one of the best-connected islands. Both Globe and Smart have solid 4G throughout White Beach, Bulabog, and the island interior.
How much data do I need?
Less than expected because Wi-Fi is everywhere, and much of your time on islands will be signal-free anyway. Plan for 10–15 GB for a 2-week trip. Adjust up if you spend significant time in Manila or Cebu city.
