Praia eSIM

49 Cape Verde plans · from $12.08

Praia, on the island of Santiago, is Cape Verde's capital and the usual first stop before island-hopping onward. A travel eSIM activates on arrival, and signal in the city itself is the strongest and steadiest anywhere in the archipelago — the real planning only starts once you leave for another island.

Landing at Nelson Mandela International Airport (RAI)

About 3km from downtown Praia — one of the shortest airport-to-center runs in this series — with a travel eSIM live well before you reach the taxi rank.

How “Unlimited” works: Never cut off — each plan gives a set amount of full-speed data, then a slower speed. The exact allowance and speed are shown on every plan.Read more

Unlimited plans never run out and your eSIM is never disconnected, but every one has a fair-use limit: a set amount of full-speed data, after which the speed is reduced. The amounts differ between plans — most give a daily full-speed allowance that refills every 24 hours from when you first activate the eSIM, while Premium plans give a larger allowance for the whole plan instead. Each plan states its own allowance and the speed after it before you buy. At the reduced speed, messaging, maps, email and light browsing still work; video streaming and video calls may not. If you want every gigabyte at full speed, choose a fixed-GB plan.

Which networks you'll be on in Praia

Siima eSIMs for Cape Verde ride CVMóvel or Unitel T+, whichever is stronger where you are. Both hold up well across Praia itself; the difference between them only really shows on the smaller outer islands.

Coverage around Praia

Plateau and the historic center

Strong, consistent 4G across Praia's clifftop old town and the government district.

Beaches and the southern coast

Full coverage along Quebra Canela and Gamboa beaches, close to the center.

Heading inland on Santiago

Good signal through most of the island, including the UNESCO-listed Cidade Velha — the first European colonial town built in the tropics.

Onward to another island

Coverage ends the moment you're between islands rather than on one — see the Cape Verde guide for why inter-island flights and the Santo Antão ferry matter more here than signal strength.

How much data you need

A couple of days in Praia runs 1-2 GB. Add 2-3 GB if Santiago's interior or Cidade Velha are on the itinerary, and budget separately for whichever island comes next.

Frequently asked questions

Does my eSIM still work once I leave Praia for another island?
Yes, as long as you land somewhere — CVMóvel and Unitel T+ both cover the main islands well. The gap isn't signal, it's getting between islands at all: Santo Antão has no airport, and inter-island flights can back up fast on wind delays.
Is Praia safe to visit?
Cape Verde overall sits at Level 1, "Exercise Normal Precautions," but Praia specifically carries a Level 2 advisory for street crime like pickpocketing and occasional armed robbery — keep valuables out of sight, especially after dark.
How do I set up an eSIM before arriving in Praia?
Install it at home while you still have Wi-Fi: open Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM and scan the QR code on your Siima eSIM page (open it from your account, or from the link in your Siima email). Leave the line switched off until you land — the plan starts counting from first use in Cape Verde, not from purchase.
How much data do I need for a trip to Praia?
A couple of days in Praia runs 1-2 GB. Add 2-3 GB if Santiago's interior or Cidade Velha are on the itinerary, and budget separately for whichever island comes next.
Is an eSIM cheaper than roaming in Praia?
Almost always. Daily roaming passes from most home carriers run $10–15 per day, while Siima plans covering Praia start from $12.08 for the whole trip. You also avoid per-megabyte charges if you exceed a roaming pass allowance.
