Unlimited plans never run out and your eSIM is never disconnected, but every one has a fair-use limit: a set amount of full-speed data, after which the speed is reduced. The amounts differ between plans — most give a daily full-speed allowance that refills every 24 hours from when you first activate the eSIM, while Premium plans give a larger allowance for the whole plan instead. Each plan states its own allowance and the speed after it before you buy. At the reduced speed, messaging, maps, email and light browsing still work; video streaming and video calls may not. If you want every gigabyte at full speed, choose a fixed-GB plan.

What happens if something goes wrong

Refund if you never install it

Do I still need a pocket Wi-Fi in Japan?
No. A travel eSIM gives you mobile data on your own phone, so there is no extra device to collect, keep charged and post back before you fly home. A pocket Wi-Fi only makes sense if a group of three or more wants to share one connection.
Does the eSIM work on the Shinkansen and the Tokyo subway?
Yes. The main Shinkansen lines — Tokaido, Sanyo and Tohoku — have near-continuous coverage, and Tokyo Metro, Toei and JR stations have signal underground. Expect brief drops in tunnels; it reconnects within seconds.
Do I get a Japanese phone number?
No. Siima Japan plans are data-only. Keep your home SIM switched on for calls and texts if you need them; LINE, WhatsApp, Google Maps and FaceTime all work over the eSIM’s data.
When should I install the eSIM?
Install it at home before you fly, while you have Wi-Fi: Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) → Add eSIM, then scan the QR code on your eSIM page — in your Siima account, or through the link we email you. Leave it switched off as your data line until you land, then turn it on and turn data roaming on for the eSIM.
How much data do I need for Japan?
For maps, messaging and the odd photo, 1–3 GB a week is usually enough. Navigating trains with Google Maps all day and using Translate’s camera adds up, so a 5–10 GB plan suits most 1–2 week trips. Streaming or hotspotting a laptop? Pick an Unlimited plan.
Is an eSIM cheaper than roaming in Japan?
