Malé is one of the most densely populated cities on earth, packed onto an island you can walk around in an hour — and for most visitors it is a transit point between the airport and a resort speedboat. A travel eSIM matters for exactly that gap: the transfer, where resort Wi-Fi has not started and your roaming bill has.
Landing at Velana International (MLE)
The airport sits on its own island, a ten-minute ferry or speedboat from Malé. Resort transfers leave from here by speedboat or seaplane — and the seaplane counter is where you will most want a working phone if the schedule slips.

The one consistent dead zone on a Maldives trip. Seaplane legs to the outer atolls run beyond coverage for much of the flight — send anything urgent before boarding.
Local islands and diving
Inhabited local islands like Maafushi and Dhigurah are covered. Dive boats out on the atoll edges and the channels lose signal.
How much data you need
A Maldives week is 1–2 GB for most people — resorts provide Wi-Fi and the point of the trip is not being online. Size a small plan for the transfers and local island days.
