Nouméa is the capital of New Caledonia, a French overseas territory in the South Pacific with the world's largest lagoon around it. The territory saw serious civil unrest in 2024 that closed the airport for weeks, and political tensions over its status remain — check current advisories before booking. A travel eSIM covers the main island; the outer islands are thinner.
Landing at La Tontouta (NOU)
The international airport is 45km north-west of Nouméa, about an hour by shuttle. Magenta, the small domestic airport in the city, serves the Loyalty Islands and the Isle of Pines.

Good coverage across the city, the beaches and the marina district. Nouméa is compact and French in layout and pace.
The west coast and the interior
The RT1 north and the coastal towns are covered. The mountainous interior and the east coast tribal areas have gaps.
Isle of Pines and the Loyalty Islands
The main villages and resorts have coverage; the beaches, the lagoon and the boat transfers largely do not.
The lagoon
UNESCO-listed and enormous. Dive and snorkel trips out to the reef lose signal quickly — operators carry radios.
How much data you need
A week in New Caledonia is 1–2 GB. Resort and hotel Wi-Fi covers most of it, and the islands have little to connect to.
