Muscat eSIM

83 Oman plans · from $6.55

Muscat is the calm alternative to a Gulf stopover — low-rise, mountain-backed and built along a coast rather than upwards. Oman is a self-drive country, and a travel eSIM is genuinely useful here: the wadis and mountain roads are where coverage ends, and knowing where that happens is part of planning the day.

Landing at Muscat International (MCT)

No rail link — taxis are unmetered, so agree the fare in advance or use the Otaxi app. Most visitors collect a hire car at the airport, which is the practical way to see the country.

Which networks you'll be on in Muscat

Siima eSIMs for Oman ride Omantel and Ooredoo Oman. Omantel has the widest reach on the interior highways and towards Musandam; both cover Muscat comprehensively.

Coverage around Muscat

Mutrah and the Corniche

Strong coverage along the corniche, through the souq and around the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. The city stretches 40km along the coast, so navigation is essential.

Wadi Shab and Bimmah

The coastal highway south is well covered. Wadi Shab loses signal once you are into the gorge past the boat crossing — the swim through to the cave is entirely offline.

Jebel Shams and the mountains

The road up holds signal to the plateau and the viewpoints. The balcony walk and the deeper canyon routes drop out, and the descent needs a 4x4.

Wahiba Sands and Musandam

Desert camps often have signal at the edge of the sands and none deeper in. Musandam's fjords have coverage in Khasab and patchy service on the dhow routes.

How much data you need

A week driving Oman is 3–5 GB — constant navigation, and the distances between wadis are long. Download offline maps for the mountain and desert legs.

Frequently asked questions

Is Oman a good alternative to a Dubai stopover?
For a quieter trip, yes — Muscat is two hours from Dubai by air and offers mountains, wadis and empty coastline rather than malls and skyscrapers. Note that a UAE plan does not cover Oman and vice versa; they are separate countries.
Will my eSIM work in the wadis and the desert?
On the highways and in the towns, yes. Inside the wadi gorges, on the Jebel Shams trails and deep in the Wahiba Sands, expect nothing — plan those legs offline and carry water accordingly.
How do I set up an eSIM before arriving in Muscat?
Install it at home while you still have Wi-Fi: open Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM and scan the QR code from your Siima confirmation email. Leave the line switched off until you land — the plan starts counting from first use in Oman, not from purchase.
How much data do I need for a trip to Muscat?
A week driving Oman is 3–5 GB — constant navigation, and the distances between wadis are long. Download offline maps for the mountain and desert legs.
Is an eSIM cheaper than roaming in Muscat?
Almost always. Daily roaming passes from most home carriers run $10–15 per day, while Siima plans covering Muscat start from $6.55 for the whole trip. You also avoid per-megabyte charges if you exceed a roaming pass allowance.
