Data plans for French Polynesia

Papeete on Tahiti is the gateway to French Polynesia — 118 islands spread across an area the size of Europe, of which Bora Bora and Moorea are the famous few. French Polynesia is a French overseas collectivity with its own networks and currency, and a France eSIM plan does not cover it.

Landing at Faaʻa International (PPT)

The airport is 5km from Papeete, and most long-haul flights land in the middle of the night. Inter-island flights and the Moorea ferry both leave from near the centre — the ferry takes 30 minutes and runs frequently.

Good coverage across the city, the market and the coastal ring road. The interior valleys and the Papenoo track lose signal quickly.

Moorea and Bora Bora

Both main tourist islands are well covered around their coastal roads and resort areas. Overwater bungalow resorts add their own Wi-Fi.

The Tuamotus and remote atolls

Rangiroa and Fakarava have coverage in the villages and around the passes; the rest of the atoll rims and the smaller islands have little or none.

Lagoon and dive trips

Boat excursions, the drift dives and the day trips out to the motus lose signal quickly. Operators carry radios; you should carry nothing more than sunscreen.

No. French Polynesia is a French overseas collectivity with its own network operators, its own ISO code and the CFP franc rather than the euro. It needs its own plan — this catches out travellers who assume a France or Europe plan carries across.
Will I have signal on the outer islands?
On Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora, yes. In the Tuamotus and the Marquesas, expect coverage in the villages and none elsewhere — treat lagoon days and inter-island boat trips as offline.
How do I set up an eSIM before arriving in Papeete?
Install it at home while you still have Wi-Fi: open Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM and scan the QR code from your Siima confirmation email. Leave the line switched off until you land — the plan starts counting from first use in French Polynesia, not from purchase.
