Dakar eSIM

21 Senegal plans · from $18.09

Dakar is where almost every Senegal trip starts, and it has the country's strongest, steadiest signal by a wide margin. A travel eSIM is live before you reach the taxi rank at Blaise Diagne; the real coverage questions start once you head north to Saint-Louis or south into the Sine-Saloum and Casamance.

Landing at Blaise Diagne International (DSS)

About 45 minutes southeast of the city center. Orange, Yas and Expresso all hold full 4G landside and at arrivals, so the eSIM is working before the taxi moves.

How “Unlimited” works: Never cut off — each plan gives a set amount of full-speed data, then a slower speed. The exact allowance and speed are shown on every plan.Read more

Unlimited plans never run out and your eSIM is never disconnected, but every one has a fair-use limit: a set amount of full-speed data, after which the speed is reduced. The amounts differ between plans — most give a daily full-speed allowance that refills every 24 hours from when you first activate the eSIM, while Premium plans give a larger allowance for the whole plan instead. Each plan states its own allowance and the speed after it before you buy. At the reduced speed, messaging, maps, email and light browsing still work; video streaming and video calls may not. If you want every gigabyte at full speed, choose a fixed-GB plan.

Which networks you'll be on in Dakar

Siima eSIMs for Senegal ride Orange (Sonatel), Yas (the 2024 rebrand of Free Senegal) and Expresso. Orange leads by a wide margin with around 56% share and the deepest reach across the capital; Yas runs a clear second; Expresso is smaller and shrinking. All three hold up well inside Dakar itself.

Coverage around Dakar

Plateau & city center

Strong, consistent 4G across downtown Dakar and the government district — this includes Orange's 5G footprint, the first commercial 5G network launched in the country.

Gorée Island

The short ferry ride from the Plateau to the UNESCO former slave-trade post doesn't cost you signal — coverage holds up well across the island.

Lac Rose day trip

The pink lake north of the city holds a signal along the approach road and thins a little right at the shoreline.

Heading out toward Saint-Louis or the Sine-Saloum

Coverage stays reliable through the main towns on the way out of Dakar, then gets patchier on the rural stretches and delta channels further from the capital.

How much data you need

A couple of days in Dakar before or after a trip north or south runs about 1 GB — mostly maps, messaging and restaurant research. Add more once you head out toward Saint-Louis or the Sine-Saloum.

Frequently asked questions

Is Dakar coverage different from the rest of Senegal?
Yes — Dakar has the country's most reliable signal across all three networks, including Orange's 5G footprint. Coverage drops off noticeably once you leave the capital toward Saint-Louis, the Sine-Saloum Delta or especially Casamance further south.
Can I buy a local SIM at Blaise Diagne airport instead?
There are operator counters at the airport, but buying there means an ID check under Senegal's SIM-registration rules and a wait on your first day. A Siima eSIM is already tied to your order before you land, so there's no counter to find and no queue to join.
How do I set up an eSIM before arriving in Dakar?
Install it at home while you still have Wi-Fi: open Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM and scan the QR code on your Siima eSIM page (open it from your account, or from the link in your Siima email). Leave the line switched off until you land — the plan starts counting from first use in Senegal, not from purchase.
How much data do I need for a trip to Dakar?
A couple of days in Dakar before or after a trip north or south runs about 1 GB — mostly maps, messaging and restaurant research. Add more once you head out toward Saint-Louis or the Sine-Saloum.
Is an eSIM cheaper than roaming in Dakar?
Almost always. Daily roaming passes from most home carriers run $10–15 per day, while Siima plans covering Dakar start from $18.09 for the whole trip. You also avoid per-megabyte charges if you exceed a roaming pass allowance.
